Karen Nelson

I attend Bellevue Presbyterian Church, and am recently retired with 27 years of full-time experience there in church ministry. I’m also a lifelong Catholic with 19 years active ministry experience in a multilingual parish as lector, parish council member and cantor. I am familiar with the paradox of being both wounded and blessed by those who share a common faith but disagree on how best to live it out, and that gives me enthusiasm and patience for the challenges of communal life.

As a music/theater teacher for more than 35 years in public and private schools for grades K-8, I witnessed profound beauty in the creativity and freedom of children who were supported and loved into finding their own voice. From them, I learned to embrace vulnerability and to respect the great diversity found in our shared humanity.

My experience as a professional musician who has worked with an wide community of musicians and artists, has given me many life lessons for which I am so grateful.

It’s important to me to respect multiple faith traditions, creative exploration, and communities that reflect transcendent Love through their varied disciplines. I honor the complexity of human spirituality that includes a wide variety in gender, cultural, religious, generational and uniquely individual expressions.

I’m in my 60s, married with two adult daughters and two ridiculously beautiful granddaughters. I enjoy animation, literature, nature, dogs, all kinds of music, gardening, and cheesy garden gnomes. I “nerd out” on neurology, psychology, astrophysics and zoology, which is to say I am keenly aware that I am not, nor ever will be, an expert in any of them. I am a lifelong beginner and I enjoy being astonished by something new.

My certification as a spiritual director was provided through the St. Placid Priory Living With The Spirit program in 2023. I’m also an active member of Spiritual Directors International.
